Night Maternity Nurses

Night Maternity nurses generally share a room with the baby and either brings the baby to mum for breast feeding during the night or bottle feed the baby themselves so that the mother has a chance to recover after the birth. Their main role is to maintain your baby's night time routine and to give you a hand with nappy changing, winding and re-settling during the night so that you can get a good nights rest in order to cope with the next day.

Night maternity nurses will work up to 6 nights per week and generally work a 10-12 hour shift with flexibility on start and finish times. We would suggest perhaps 7pm to 7am or 9pm to 7am. The earlier start can be a welcome option especially if you have older children who need your attention at bedtime or if you would like to go out for a couple of hours. We are only able to supply night maternity nurses in the London area. As a general rule positions are booked approx. 4 -6 months in advance; however we are used to handling emergency bookings.

Night Maternity Nurses are expected to undertake responsibility for the care of the baby and mother and the duties include:

  • Changing nappies
  • Settling the baby
  • Feeding the baby if bottle fed
  • Advising on breast feeding as necessary
  • Preparing and sterilising bottles
  • Dressing and preparing the baby in the morning

Salary guidelines for night maternity nurses

Night Maternity nurses are self-employed and work on a freelance basis. Salaries vary according to age, experience and qualifications and the number of babies she is responsible for, e.g. single baby, twins or triplets.

£12-15 gross per hour for a single baby
£16-18 gross per hour for twins or triplets
